Geum triflorum

Writer: Anna Anna

It’s easy to see why it’s named Prairie Smoke or Old Man’s Whiskers. I love knowing the latin names of plants for classification purposes, but sometimes common names hold a whimsy that’s so descriptive.

I’m seeing Geum triflorum in it’s bud stage around town right now.

This photo was taken at the library in Cross Plains, which has a nicely established prairie. We’re working on an area in the front of our house that we want to develop into a short prairie. This plant is definitely on my list!
